The presentation was part of the “Dialogue to Define Corruption” conference organised by the United Nations Global Compact. Dr Mark started by explaining why Malaysia is facing significant challenges in the area of corruption, yet is still performing better than many of its neighbours. While doing business with integrity is not easy, it is definitely possible. Therefore, Corporate Malaysia should play its part to maintain the country’s international status as an attractive place to invest and do business.
An excellent way of contributing is for companies to get their own house in order, for example by obtaining a certification under the ISO 37001 standard. Moreover, companies can join collective action groups to maximise their impact. In this context, Dr Mark announced the launch of a new business integrity alliance with the objective of establishing just and fair conditions for businesses in Malaysia and South-East Asia. This new business integrity alliance will work closely with the UN Global Compact Malaysia and will bring companies together to identify problem areas, make representation to the Government as well as share best practices.
